‘American Horror Stories’: 5 Things You May Have Missed in Episode 7

It’s time to get meta again. At the beginning of Michelle’s video game, Connie and Dylan rattle off a laundry list of AHS references. One of those included a recent interview from Sarah Paulson that surprised fans.

“We could always go to Norms, get some pancakes, go home, binge watch Roanoke,” a scared Dylan says.

“Why did Sarah Paulson shit talk that season? It’s so good,” Connie replies.

That shit talking? It’s a nod to an interview with Paulson that happened this June. While talking to The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Paulson admitted that Roanoke was a frustrating season for her. “I was so underwhelmed by the whole experience because I felt like I had entered into a new place inside of myself in terms of what I thought possible, in terms of what I might be willing to see if I can do,” Paulson said. “I felt really kind of trapped by my responsibility and my contractual obligation to do American Horror Story. As much as it’s my home and I’ve loved it always, it was the first time I felt like I wish I could have gone to Ryan and said, ‘Please let me sit this one out. You know, let me out.'”

Some have wondered if these comments imply that there was drama between Paulson and series creator Ryan Murphy. But this playful in-show ribbing proves that’s clearly not the case. Hey, when you’re in as many Murphy projects as Sarah freaking Paulson you can’t love them all.
