At least 29 people were killed after a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit southern Haiti this morning.
Jerry Chandler, Haiti’s director of Civil Protection, told the Associated Press that 29 people were confirmed dead and that rescues have been dispatched to the epicenter where local reporters posted videos of residents frantically digging through rubble to find casualties.
Haiti’s prime minister Ariel Henry, declared a one-month state of emergency and would not ask for international help until the full scale of the devastation is known.
The epicenter, Les Cayes, is a city located about 75 miles west of Port-au-Prince.
