The Field of Dreams is getting a sequel.
Not the movie. The MLB game.
The Cincinnati Reds will host the Chicago Cubs in next year’s edition of the “Field of Dreams” game on Aug. 11, 2022, on a temporary field built on the set of the iconic 1989 film in Dyersville, Iowa. With nearly six million viewers, the inaugural game between the visiting Yankees and host Chicago White Sox was the most watched regular-season MLB game on any network since 2005.
“I think it’s going to be an incredible experience, especially for a lot of us who grew up watching the movie,” Reds manager David Bell said. “From everything I’ve been told and on TV, it looks like it’s just a really special and meaningful environment they’ve created out there. … I feel very honored and lucky to be one of the teams in the second year.”
It will be hard to match the in-game drama of this year, when the Yankees rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth inning to take an 8-7 lead but lost a two-run walk-off home run into the cornstalks in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Like with the Yankees-White Sox, the Cubs-Reds will play on a Thursday, have an off day on Friday and finish up a three-game series over the weekend in Cincinnati.
While the White Sox were the logical choice to host the first game because of the movie’s central storyline around “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, the Triple-A affiliate of the Cubs is based in Des Moines, Iowa.
“We are honored to be selected for the second edition of MLB at Field of Dreams,” Cubs president of business operations Crane Kenney said. “Given our long-standing affiliation with the Iowa Cubs and the fact the state is in our home television territory, the Cubs enjoy an incredible following in Iowa. We look forward to playing in front of our Iowa fans and expanding on the amazing success of the first Field of Dreams Game.”
