Hundreds of mourners attended a vigil in Plymouth, England, Friday night to honor the victims of Jake Davison, who shot his own mother and four other people in a rampage Thursday that ended with him turning his gun on himself.
Mourners placed candles and flowers at a park in Keyham, Devon, not far from where the shotgun rampage took place, the Sun reported Saturday.
Lee Martyn, 43, and daughter Sophie were among the five people killed when Davison, 22, started firing on a quiet cul-de-sac on August 12.
Davison shot them after first killing his mother Maxine, 51, in her home.
He then went on to kill Stephen Washington, 59, who was walking his dog, and Kate Shepherd, 66, a mother of one, who later died at the hospital.
UK authorities said they are investigating why Davison was given back his confiscated gun and gun license last month, the AP reported Saturday.
Police took Davison’s gun and license in December 2020 following an allegation of assault three months earlier, the AP said. Davison got them back last month.
“We will examine what police actions were taken and when, the rationale behind police decision-making and whether relevant law, policy and procedures were followed concerning Mr. Davison’s possession of a shotgun,” the office’s regional director, David Ford, said in a statement.
Washington’s son Simon paid tribute to his slain father, writing online: “After tonight’s events we lost our dad.
“My mum lost her world. My kids and brothers and sister’s kids lost their granddad.
“Each and every one of us will miss him deeply, RIP dad you will be missed, love you.”
Saying he was “getting uglier” and “defeated by life,” Davison’s social media accounts show that he thought of himself as an incel, the “involuntary celibates” behind a series of devastating mass murders in the US and Canada.
His accounts — since taken down — showed he was obsessed with American gun culture, and even claimed to have been born in Phoenix, according to media reports.
Davison wore a New York Giants shirt in his last YouTube rant late last month in which he compared himself to the killing machine played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in “The Terminator.”
Speaking directly into the camera, ranting Davison says: “I’m still in the same position, same period of life — still a f—ing this-that, virgin, f—ing fat, ugly whatever you want to call it.
