Padres fire ex-Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild amid rotation struggles

The struggling San Diego Padres have fired their pitching coach, Larry Rothschild.

The team announced the news on Monday, with manager Jayce Tingler adding that bullpen coach Ben Fritz will serve as the interim pitching coach for the remainder of the season.

Rothschild was hired by the Padres in 2019, following 18 years as a pitching coach with the Cubs and Yankees.

“Larry has been a tremendous asset for our organization over the last two seasons, and we appreciate the experience, hard work, and dedication that he brought to the position,” Tingler said in a statement posted to the Padres’ official Twitter page. “We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Rothschild’s release comes at a challenging time for San Diego (68-58), who went 8-11 in the month of August.

After Sunday’s 7-4 loss to the Phillies, the Padres dropped to one game behind the Reds in the wild-card standings. The Dodgers currently hold the other wild-card spot in the National League.

Injuries and underperformance have been a recipe for the Padres’ struggles as they attempt to make the playoffs, especially in the rotation. Blake Snell, whom San Diego traded for during the offseason, hasn’t played up to full potential.

Craig Stammen delivered two scoreless frames from the mound in Sunday’s 7-4 loss to the Phillies, in which pitcher Ryan Weathers also struggled for San Diego.

Chris Paddack, who has been out with a left oblique strain, has also underperformed from the mound when healthy. He was placed on the 10-day injured list on July 31, but has been progressing. On Friday he underwent an “intensive” bullpen session where he threw 25 pitches, and is scheduled to throw another bullpen session today.

Mike Clevinger continues to recover from Tommy John surgery, and is on schedule in his recovery, per MLB.com. He’s hoping to return by the start of the 2022 season.

The Padres begin their series against the Dodgers at home on Tuesday.
