After four seasons as partners on the PBS crime drama series, Sunny (Sanjeev Bhaskar) and Cassie (Nicola Walker) are parting ways. Not by their own volition, though, for better or for worse. Spoilers from this point forward — as viewers of the Unforgotten Season 4 finale already know, Cassie died in the final moments of the season, meaning Walker is set to exit the series. If she’s such a big part of the show, why is she leaving? We have answers.
The crime series has run for four seasons on British network ITV, airing on PBS over in the States. Both Walker and creator Chris Lang have opened up about the decisions made in Season 4 and moving forward, so we already know a bit about what to expect from the British series in the episodes to come — if there are more, that is.
Here’s everything we know about Nicola Walker’s exit, Season 5, and the future of Unforgotten without Cassie.
What happened in the Unforgotten Season 4 finale?
In the penultimate episode of the series, DCI Cassie Stuart was involved in a car crash that, by the end of the season, turned out to be fatal. Physically and emotionally drained from work (which, by the way, she had just come out of retirement), Cassie wasn’t paying attention to the road when she was struck by another moving vehicle.
Why did Cassie die in the Unforgotten Season 4 finale? Is Nicola Walker leaving Unforgotten?
Yes, Walker is leaving Unforgotten for good. In an interview with TV Insider, the actress opened up about why she’s leaving. For the most part, it’s because she felt it was simply time to go.
“We were talking from the beginning, really, about what he was doing with this character and this story he wanted to tell,” Walker said. “Chris and I were always interested in looking at the cost of being involved with these sorts of cases that we all love watching on television. Cassie does not have superpowers. She’s an ordinary person who’s really good at her job, and it took her to the place of having an emotional breakdown.”
According to the actress, this was not a quick decision. She and Lang have been chatting about it since the third season of the crime drama, and viewers might have guessed it was bound to happen.
“We talked a lot after Season 3 about where it was going to go, and it was a joint decision,” she said. “I think the clues were there in Season 3. The title of the show is Unforgotten and I think there’s a great deal of narrative beauty to this woman. She’s not going to be forgotten. I felt like she was quietly very unusual on television because she was a real person.”
Will there be a Season 5 of Unforgotten?
Yes, Unforgotten has already been renewed for Season 5 on ITV. Walker won’t star opposite Bhaskar’s lead, Sunny, though. According to Lang, there’ll be a new partner helming the series alongside him.
Who will replace Nicola Walker in Season 5 of Unforgotten?
We don’t know yet. But keep an eye out for new Unforgotten casting news to find out!
